I attended the ASCENT: Ann Arbor Summer School on Semiconductor Science and Technology at the University of Michigan, from August 10 to 14, 2026. This NSF funded school (grants 2328701/2328702, Future of Semiconductors (FuSe) program, with industry partners including Samsung and Intel) focused on the co-design of ultra wide bandgap (UWBG) materials and devices, hosted by U. Michigan with faculty from U. Minnesota and U. Notre Dame. We covered thin film growth and characterization (sputtering, mist CVD, MBE, and PLD) and toured the Lurie Nanofabrication Facility and the Michigan Center for Materials Characterization. On the theory side, we covered band structure, transport, defects and doping, with a hands-on first-principles computational lab. The school also included device transport characterization and breakdown, and an industry panel.
